Chapter 10
It was late afternoon in the elven realm as Sarya and I walked through the portal into the seaside minotaur town. The rolling cliffs that Iâd come to associate with Saryaâs hometown gently stretched down to a glittering sea below, and pristine white stone buildings dotted the grassy hills like seashells that had washed up a little too far during high tide.
âWow,â I whispered and started toward the bustling town.
A shield shimmered ahead of us as if the whole place was protected from outsiders, but the barrier slid over my skin like silk and let us pass without any incident. I looked to the left and right as it returned to its almost invisible state and wondered what it was for. The minotaurs had never mentioned any kind of protection, but they had said that their auntâs lily garden had died, and that usually meant that there were evil creatures nearby, so maybe their mayor had decided it was time.
âI know,â Sarya said and reached for my hand. âIâve never actually been here. The paintings in the palace donât do it justice. Father always warned me not to come here, but I canât understand why. Itâs so beautiful.â
âMaybe he thought that youâd fall in love with the sea and stay here forever,â I laughed and squeezed her hand.
The path down the gentle hill was a mixture of dirt and crushed seashells, but none of the pieces were big enough that they would be able to puncture a tire. There was plenty of room for two carts to pass by each other without issue, and several smaller roads branched off toward the houses to our left and right like streets in the human world.
âI might,â the redheaded elf laughed and flipped her ponytail. âI might be able to work on my tan. All the time in the library and my dorm room has seriously affected my perfect cinnamon color. Even the red has started to fade. If I get any paler, then my mother will start an intervention. We Kaylens are known for our beauty.â
âAnd your humility,â I teased.
The tall elf definitely had a right to brag with her luxurious red hair and cinnamon-colored skin. The deep crimson colors only added to the brilliance of her silver eyes, and the soft elven dress she wore hugged her willowy frame just enough to hint at her small curves. Even her pointy ears were accentuated with silver jewelry all the way up to their tips.
âNaturally,â she winked.
The two-story white houses gave way to three and four-story buildings with blue domed roofs the closer we came to the town center, and the smell of ocean water wrapped itself around us like a blanket. A mossy wooden sign with a pint of beer marked one of the local taverns, and the sound of drunken singing carried through the windows and open door even as we neared the ports below.
An eight-foot-tall minotaur with curly black hair stomped in front of our path and put his hands on his hips and snorted angrily.
